People in Leicester can do their bit to combat climate change and our throwaway culture by taking part in an event where they’ll be able to exchange unwanted goods with other people. The Big Green Swap will take place in the St Matthews area of the city this month.
Described as an attempt to reduce the environmental and human effects of ‘fast fashion’, organisers are inviting people to swap clothing, toys, baby gear and arts and crafts materials. The swap will be held at St Matthews centre, in Malabar Road, on Sunday, May 15 between 12pm and 3pm.
Climate Action Leicester, the main organisers of the event, have teamed up with other climate action groups including Women for Change, Quetzal, Leicester Green Guardians, Leicestershire Community Cupboard and the Leicester Nappy Library – which who lend out washable nappy kits.

In a statement, Climate Action Leicester said:” It’s usually low income and BAME communities, women and children who suffer the most from climate change, both locally and across the world. Climate Action wants to work with other groups as much as possible, both to build community increasing people’s capacity to cope with climate change, and to get more people thinking about the climate now so we can minimise it.”
Members of the community will have the opportunity to bring unloved or unused items. The big green swap will be divided into four sections.
